The Wednesday Slow Session was started in Edinburgh in 1998 and has provided an entry-level session for hundreds of people over the years, many of whom have gone on to join other sessions, or establish their own in other locations.
The session was started by Nigel Gatherer, who was concerned that while sessions were a great place for playing informally with other people, they could be elitist and unfriendly. Nigel wanted to create a session where people would feel welcomed and included, and where they could build up confidence and repertoire and learn to play with other people. That, after all, was the whole point of learning traditional music, reasoned Mr Gatherer. (A full history of the Wednesday Slow Session can be seen here.)
The aims of the Wednesday Slow Session have remained the same, and as long as people want to play music with others and are prepared to leave their egos at the door, everyone is welcome.
The Wednesday Slow Session is currently at The Canon's Gait, 232 Canongate,
Edinburgh, EH8 8DQ. An idea of the tunes played at the session can be found on the Wednesday Slow Session Repertoire Page. Any questions about the session can be directed to Nigel Gatherer.
