Just heard for the first time in the Observer yesterday about the Bohlen-Pierce scale. The scale ends on a note three times the frequency of the base note (would that be high G if the base note was C?) and this range is divided into 13 equal intervals (with a ratio I guess of the thirteenth root of 3, as opposed to the twelfth root of 2 in the conventional scale).
There are lots of clips on YouTube of performances on instruments specially constructed to play in this scale, e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpZ5bdeVWoY which has a kind of klezmer feel to it.
Since it was only invented about thirty years ago, I guess there won't be much so far in the way of "traditional" music using this scale. I would imagine though that fiddlers could learn to use the Bohlen-Pierce scale without requiring a specially constructed violin.

As predicted, our brothers in arms Da Capo Alba did very well, sweeping the board. There are three different trophies for senior orchestras (musicianship, professionalism and entertainment), and DCA won all three - well done to them.

It's no secret that my attitude to the contest was slightly different; in my view we were winners because we went to Birmingham in good numbers, and we played to the best of our abilities. I think it's a good thing to have something to work towards - it focuses us, and encourages us to increase our effort - but I wasn't going to be upset by not winning. I said to a couple of people that if we got somewhere in the middle I'd be very happy. When I was told we had come second in two of the trophies and third in the other, I was gobsmacked; I hadn't been expecting that, and I'm delighted that our hard work paid off.

Well done to everybody involved - we done good!

There are three different weeks, with emphasis on less experienced players in the first week (18th-23rd July), and more experienced players in the second week (25th-30th July).
Time for another Cafe Ceilidh - back at St Colm's, Dalry Road again next Tuesday (23rd Feb), doors open about 1pm for a 1.15pm start, finish 3.30pm. No particular theme this time so just bring whatever songs or tunes you like. All SMG students plus friends and anyone else who just wants to listen will be made very welcome. I have no info at present about tunes for 'the band'.
Cheers,
