John Carmichael's Farewell to Scotland
![]() Accordionist John Carmichael has played with many people, from Jimmy Shand to Calum Kennedy, from Fergie MacDonald to Ian Fraser. To boot, he's a very nice, generous guy with tons of stories and a million laughs. He's a pleasure to spend time with. In the 1960s he emigrated to Australia, and Andrew Rankin penned this 4-part pipe march-style tune for him. This transcription is from ian Powrie's 1967 LP 'Ian Powrie's Farewell to Scotland'. John came back to Scotland after a few years. Nigel Gatherer Crieff, Perthshire |

Yet another for learning, Nigel! You seem to be able to come up with just the right tunes so often and this one is a cracker. Many thanks once again.

RE: TOW#48: John Carmichael's Farewell to Scotland
I have to agree with John on this one, it is a cracker and being a four parter a lot more to remember! I am working on it and hopefully I'll have something by next weekend..... (it's Notting Hill Carnival down here this weekend...not good for practicing!!!!!)......

That Shippey sounds very good, Tosh, and you render the tune well here.
Congratulations once again. Must have a go at this one too having heard you. JK Mandolins - Handcrafted in Argyll, Scotland. |

Many thanks John, thanks for the kind words. It is a hard one to memorize but it was worth it in the end. Really great tune.

RE: TOW#48: John Carmichael's Farewell to Scotland
Tosh, here is my version of the tune, not yet memorised but played from Nigel's score with his suggested chords. Played on octave and tenor guitar with backing on octave, multi-tracked on Reaper as usual. Link is to Soundcloud page.

RE: TOW#48: John Carmichael's Farewell to Scotland
Love the sound of the Octave and the back up John. The doubling up on 3rd and 4th parts is fantastic. It's a great tune and you could see this sitting well in a session......very upbeat and toe tapping!!!!
