Alternative Venue for Wednesday Slow Session in July and August
I have just had a chat with the manager David Maclean at the Argyle Bar. The basement there, known as the Hide, is available Wednesday evenings over the summer, apart from private bookings, of which there are currently none.
David would be happy to open the basement if numbers attending (and buying drinks) were sufficient to cover his heating and lighting costs. I know a lot of Slow Session regulars have resorted to the Canon's Gate in recent weeks, and it's a great session, but now quite large, loud, and often not at all slow. This is just a flier to see if there is sufficient interest to give it a try, maybe next week (4th July). [During the winter months, from mid-September on, there is a quizz night in the Hide on Wednesday evenings, so it's not a possible permanent alternative to Bennet's during term time.] |

Did it work out? Looking for a session tonight!
Editing post-session: a great one in the Canon's Gait, where a lively group of Spanish youngsters got up and danced to the music. 2 girls also did some irish dance, hi kicks an a'! |

RE: Alternative Venue for Wednesday Slow Session in July and August
Hoping to have a trial run at the Hide (Argyle Bar basement) next Wednesday 18th July, from say around 9pm.
Thinking of calling it the "Slow to Middling" session, so we have permission to play slightly faster, but maybe still not as fast as at Canon's Gate. Still awaiting confirmation from the Argyle manager that the date is OK. When I get that I'll circulate the usual groups. Would like to invite the Sandy Bell's moothie people as well, and maybe cover some of their sets, at least the ones I have or can find dots for (so sight readers not familiar with the tunes can join in). And thought the session signature tune could be "Middling Thankyou" (JPG attached), a jig I am very fond of (especially the title), but have seldom heard played except on Robbie Shepherd's Saturday night programme. [To make a traditional jig set we could add "Hamilton House" and "Cumberland Reel" (which is of course a jig).] Should know by tomorrow evening if it's a goer. |

RE: Alternative Venue for Wednesday Slow Session in July and August
Summer Slow (to Middling) Session is now definitely on in the Hide, Argyle Bar, 17 Argyle Place EH9 1JJ, this coming Wednesday 18th July, from around 8.45.
May be a one-off, or may continue on subsequent Wednesdays in July and August, depending on how it goes and how people feel about the venue. Hoping for a good turnout, including quite a few from the Sandy Bell moothie group. There's room for a least 40 in the Hide. |
