Cafe Ceilidh Tuesday 19th June - Scottish Storytelling Centre

The last Cafe Ceilidh of the 2011-2012 season will be held at the Storytelling Centre in the High Street on Tuesday 19th June at 2 - 4pm and this one is part of the 'Old Town Festival' so songs and tunes that have an Edinburgh connection would be great. If you can't think of any though don't worry, just bring anything else you think folk would like. Let's make this a 'grand finale'! As always all SMG students, friends and those who simply want to listen are most welcome.

Tunes for the day are:
1. West Edinburgh Jigs Set - Cowan Road/Gorgie Farm from Nigel's Joy of Sets Book 4 pps 18-19 followed by Flowers of Edinburgh - Tunes book 2 p13.
2. Gaelic Waltzes Set 1 from Caleerie Buskers' repertoire.
3. Lothian Road Polka/The Soggy Path - the second tune is in Nigel's new red tune book p6.

What about "Within a Mile o' Edinburgh Toon"?
I had a tape of Kenneth McKellar singing this but couldn't find it on YouTube. What I did find was a ridiculously fast rendering of the tune by a military band at

Nigel did a version in one of his classes, but it was quite far from the song structure which at least is more or less preserved in the band version here.
Then of course there's "Bonnie Wells o' Wearie" and of course "Caller Herrin".

Thanks Alistair: I agree that treatment of "Within a Mile" doesn't sound remotely Scottish the way it's played. I'm guessing that some of the singers may take on Caller Herring tho they can sing whatever they want! I do like the Bonnie Wells of Wearie and have danced many a time to Hamilton House!
I don't think we'll be able to add to the tunes set list at this stage, as we only get 3 shots, if that, but if you should come along, you could do any of those as your solo! If not, will bear in mind for future gigs.
