Partans in the Creel



I first heard this as a strathspey on a recording from Bobby Harvey and his Band. I’ve also heard it played as a reel by the Wrigley Sisters of Orkney, so I thought I’d present it in a reel form.

There's also a song which uses this melody which you'll hear a lot at "singy" sessions throughout the land.

Heard the song also from one of my friends, Liz Wilson,who lived in Orkney for a good many years, and also Scott Gardiner sings it. The song is usually in "slow strathspey" time.

I transposed the tune from a strathspey rhythm, but because I am smitten by the Wrigleys, I presented it more like their way.

Here is my stab at Partans In The Creel, having a bit of trouble with the trebles, but managed a take with going round just once. Probably because I use a thicker pick (Wegen TF120) but I prefer these to the thinner pics. Anyway I've had a go.......

Like this version, Tosh, and the new gear seems to be working well - camera and microphone.
I have decided to have a go with more of a strathspey feel after reading the other posts here (and the triplets are easier in Strathspey timing!) I am using my mandolin, octave and tenor guitar and my usual technique of recording a track at a time into Reaper with 2 mics then rendering the mix down to mp3 for posting on SoundCloud. Octave panned about 45% left and tenor 45% right; mandolin and guitar in the middle.
