It was certainly a good weekend for me Nigel and worth the trip to Aberdeen. Lots of good music. Makes a change to get away from the thousands of fiddlers. ;-) Suppose well just have to suffer in silence this weekend. ;-) Scots Fiddle Festival 2011

Oh yes Nigel, I had a great time.
There were plenty of highlights to inspire me to keep playing, both in the workshops & during the concerts too.
Just a shame they aren't held every year.
As George says, it was rather strange to see so few Fiddles at such a music weekend in Scotland. Of course they'll get their turn this weekend. Wish I could have stayed over long enough to take in that festival too. Big Grin

For those of you who missed this event, here are two videos featuring Brendan Begley, Mary MacNamara, & Pip Murphy, taken last Sunday afternoon in the Blue Lamp, at the Button Boxes & Moothies Free Reed Convention in Aberdeen.

I was sitting in the corner behind these three, hiding from the Free Reed Police, with my Fiddle disguised as a Melodeon! :-)

For those of you who couldn't access the photos from the previous link, I posted them on this thread:

I wonder, does anyone else have any photos or video clips they'd like to share?

Yes, a great weekend indeed,, and having also since been to the Scots Fiddle Festival this last weekend, it was a complete turnabout in terms of numbers of fiddles versus reeds! W e did have a "reed section" in one of the fiddle workshops yesterday - myself and oboe/cor anglais player!
I have a couple of video clips awaiting further processing and will attach a pic of the Lewis melodeon group (can't seem to attach more than one pic at once!).
BTW, Ptarmigan, that was Leo McCann in the middle of one of your pics and to the R of another.

RE: Button Boxes and Moothies ~ Aberdeen 2011!
Ahh lucky you. I'm afraid, much as I would have really liked to stay over there for the whole week & take in the Fiddle Weekend too, I just couldn't justify being off work for so long, at this time of year.

I did attend the Fiddle thingy a few years back & ended up in Pete Clark's class, where I found I was the only player, out of 24, who wasn't actually wearing shoulder scaffolding! Tongue

I actually have my Great Grandfather's Fiddle & he didn't even use a chin rest, never mind ye olde scaffolding! Ahh the good old days. Of course, maybe that was just the custom, around Tranent, back in them days. Cool

Anyway, I look forward to seeing your video clips & yes I do know Leo, a fine musician. I met him way back in 1992 at a session in Pomeroy, just a day or two before he left Tyrone for Aberdeen. I put him in touch with Kenny Hadden & the rest, as they say, is history! Big Grin

Herewith a link to a few pics from the weekend: I've included one of the very new sculpture in memory of the Gordon Highlanders, only unveiled in October this year. My grandfather and great-grandfather both served in the regiment in WW1.
Good to see that melodeon playing is thriving in Lewis as it's getting pretty rare elsewhere in Scotland!

And a couple of videos of English player, Matt Quinn:

Trish, the moothie player is Billy Jolly from Orkney and I'd like permission to use your image if that's OK as I'm gathering info. about the moothie in Scotland.

Fine by me George: I've sent you a private message with my email address, so if you email me I can send it direct to you - that's if you can't just "lift" it from Flickr!
