Beethoven Sonatina in G
![]() I first heard this played by the Irish folk group Dordan, with Mary Bergin playing whistle. It captivated me then, and I thought you might like to have a go. Nigel Gatherer Crieff, Perthshire |

RE: TOW#25: Beethoven Sonatina in G
Way to raise the tone Nigel! The depressing thing is that if you google this piece, you get all kinds of children under 10 giving it laldy on the piano on Youtube. So, to up the ante for those of you with friends, or who enjoy playing with yourselves digitally (that didn't come out right) I have converted the piano left hand to Mandolin 2. The attached pdf was created on Finale Notepad (sorry no tab). In order to make this program very inexpensive they don't let you use grace notes, so you will have to add your own. Use a pencil on the Mandolin 1 part and put a B before the A in bar 1, a C before the B in bar 3, a B before the A in bar 5, a F# before the E in bar 6 and repeat when the phrases are repeated in bars 17, 19, 21 and 22. I bet you are confused....
From the sublime to the old time. Just prior to working out the Sonatina I transcribed 'Joke on the Puppy' from Lynn Chirps Smiths recording Down in Little Egypt and it makes a nice set in a perverse way. Play the Beethoven first and blame Nigel for giving me a Friday evening off.... |

We could maybe try these at the next Slow Session, Nigel.
Might be best to distribute the PDFs in advance though: not sure how many Slow Session regulars look at this forum. |

I looked up "Joke on the Puppy" and all I could find on the web was this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j8uUID-pXQ which is terrific but an entirely different tune. http://www.campin.me.uk |

RE: TOW#25: Beethoven Sonatina in G
Nothing like a bit of classical music to liven up a session!
I played Beethoven's Ode to Joy in Waxy's in Glasgow when Germany were doing rather well against England in the Football World Cup. All those clever students on the Trad course at RSAMD asked what tune I was playing. And we recently did Schubert's 'Trout Quintet" theme when playing at....a trout farm! And it anyone starts falling asleep in a session, then Brahms' Lullaby comes in useful! Any other favourites? |

Harmonious Blacksmith?
Air on a G string? Eine Kleine Nachtmusic? Or there's a fantastic Beethoven piano piece called "Six Ecossaises for Piano": nice performance of this at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq2gZPLXMYQ |
