Planned versus spontaneous

A while back Nigel brought along a tune as "Session Tune of the Week" and I wondered how people feel about continuing that idea. Now we have this forum available we could discuss the choice of designated tune in advance each week. Indeed there are many tunes in the session books which never seem to get played, so the designated tune could, at least occasionally, be one of those "neglected" (or at least overlooked) gems. On the other hand it's good to have an incentive to learn new tunes not in the repertoire covered by the books.

Yet I would not like the sessions to become too planned (and some may feel there should be no planning at all). The great joy of the Slow Session is that someone can just propose a tune and everyone starts playing it (or at least as soon as they have heard Nigel play the first couple of bars). That's OK of course once you know the popular tunes, but it's also great to hear a tune you don't know and see if you can pick it up, or at least remember its name so you can learn it for next time.

It would be good to hear what others feel.
Alistair.

RE: Planned versus spontaneous
Excellent idea. I am very much in favour of this.

RE: Planned versus spontaneous
Albeit an irregular visitor, good idea: I already play a number of tunes which are my personal favourites, but are not in the SMG books: some of them most of you will know, some may be less well known. I'm a sucker for slow airs, by the way (not just because they are slower to play!!)
BTW, I've just realised that by replying to Alistair, all his post got copied again, so have gone back and edited it out, in the interests of brevity!
Trish
