Cro Cinn T-Saile
![]() A lovely slow tune from the playing of Alison Kinnaird. The tune is also called The Cattle Fold of Kintail, or The Kintail Lullaby. Nigel Gatherer Crieff, Perthshire |

RE: TOW#8: Cro Cinn T-Saile
Lovely tune once again, Nigel. Going to have a go on the octave mandolin this time. Thanks again.

RE: TOW#8: Cro Cinn T-Saile
Interesting tune Nigel, I played it on the Mandocello because it sounded better than on the mando, but I'll have a go on the mando later.

RE: TOW#8: Cro Cinn T-Saile
I have been playing this lovely tune on the guitar and listened to Tosh Marshalls version.. I have to say that it is better on strings and the whistle does not do it justice Nigel (abject appologies) but I would like to hear our Douglas playing it on the flute

RE: TOW#8: Cro Cinn T-Saile
No offense taken, Ursula. I've just thrown out my whistle and I'll never play this tune on whistle ever again. In fact I'll never play anything on the whistle ever again. In fact I'll never play anything on anything ever again. In fact, I think I'll just go and eat worms.

RE: TOW#8: Cro Cinn T-Saile
Nigel, I'm sure it sounds just as good on whistle as it does on any instrument. A great tune and thanks again for posting. Ursula thanks for the kind words and go easy on Nigel !!!!!! Fish n Chips are tastier than worms!!!!

Good renditions Tosh. That mandocello is a mighty beast! Great sound from it. You've got me thinking about building something different from my mandolins and octaves with that 5-course you are sporting in the second video.
Here is my version and I played both parts twice - AABB as a variation or maybe just because I knew no better! Played on my JK octave with backing chords on same instrument. Cro Cinn T-Saile JK Mandolins - Handcrafted in Argyll, Scotland. |

RE: TOW#8: Cro Cinn T-Saile
John, that is cool on the Octave, really nice sound and as I said on the cafe, I think I'm a bit speedy! No idea of the tempo for this but I added mandolin to the other vid. It's a dodgy beginning without a click track to lead you in but it was interesting to try. Also I bought a mic stand for the Zoom q3 and put it overhead to get a better shot of the instrument. John, have a crack at a 10 string, it's an interesting concept and your mandos always sound great to me. Paul's instruments are first class and his scale length is a cm longer than norm with a bigger body. I have to say this is louder than the Cherry but I love it and am getting it played in slowly. As with any new instrument there is a settling in period and a change of strings helps (I use D'Addario FT's because I love the wound A).
Anyway here is my dodgy third vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEsomI0yiEI Tosh Marshall Paul Shippey Cherry Oval Paul Shippey 10 String Mandolin Weber Gallatin Mandocello Eastman 815 Eastman 505 http://mandolins.yolasite.com http://www.flickr.com/photos/toshpics http://www.youtube.com/user/ToshMarshall https://www.facebook.com/tosh.marshall |

RE: TOW#8: Cro Cinn T-Saile
I've played this tune for a very long time. The version I do is based on a recording of a West Highland fiddler whose name I forget - he played it in D, but I do it in A on a G alto recorder which puts it into the usual pipe scale, basically the same pitches as Nigel's.
My timing is way different from Nigel's notation - very slow, extremely free and with much more unequal notes. I wouldn't thank anybody for trying to play along with me, except with a drone. There is a standard pipe arrangement, with a third part (Donald Macleod?). It's different again. http://www.campin.me.uk |
