Joan's Jig

Great to have the music for this Nigel.
We shall definitely play it on Thursday at the Borough. I tried it last week but no-one else knew it, and in any case I had picked it up slightly wrong as usual. We also played "Middling Thankyou" last week: come to think of it that would make a nice follow on to Jaon's Jig, although my other idea was to collect jigs with girls' names: Joan's, Peggy's, Nuala's, Isabella's, Bridget's (?), Mishie's (I guess not a girl's name?). I thought there was also a "Jean's Jig" but couldn't find it anywhere ... Alistair. |

You might be thinking of "Jean's Reel" by Bobby MacLeod, or perhaps a tune by Fergie MacDonald? I'm still away, so I haven't got my books with me.

Nigel's version isn't quite the same as what Chris Evans plays - Evans adds more notes, the crotchet downbeats are played staccato, and the B part has alternate endings (second time round the same as the ending of the first part).
Other tunes for girls called Joan: "Lovely Joan" (English song) and "Joan's Placket is Torn" (Playford-era dance tune, probably the original of "The Cock of the North"). Here is my version of Joan's jig, another new tune to me. Thanks again, Nigel, for taking the time to put up these tunes. It's a good way to keep looking out for new numbers and keep on trying to improve technique and repertoire.
