Session 10/12/08

Alastair is waiting for confirmation from the Meadow Bar, as to whether we can hold the slow session there. Watch this space!

Well I went to see the manager at the Meadow Bar this afternoon, and he confirmed that everything is fine for us to hold the slow session in the Meadow Upstairs on Wednesday 10th December. Wednesday 17th is also available if we want it. It would be good to know how many would be keen to have a session on the 17th. We could make it a kind of end of term & Christmas celebration, though in a way that's what we will already have had at the closing stramash earlier in the evening.

That's the good news. The bad news is that the Meadow Bar is definitely not available any Wednesdays in January. Thursdays, though, are apparently always free. Anyone feel like starting a Thursday session?

Re. your email request, Alistair, I would certainly like a session to be held on the 17th.

As regards Thursday sessions, Nigel's EMGO meets 7-9 on Thursdays so I don't know how that would affect things?

Well if enough of the EMGO people were interested in a session after the class, that would be enough to form a core. But there would need to be a "champion" driving it along.
One idea might be to move the slow session to Thursdays just in January, when at least two venues would seem to be available (Argyle Bar and Meadow Bar). The go back to Wednesdays when Bennet's becomes available again.
It would be good to know other people's thoughts on this.

Alistair has suggested doing some Christmas tunes, so I'm going to bring some copies, hopefully. Meantime, how about

I would also like also to put in a word for "Child in the Manger" (hymn 180 in the old Church of Scotland Hymnary, Third Edition). The tune is a Gaelic melody, and the original words, attributed to Mary Macdonald, were translated into the English version in the hymn book by Lachlan Macbean.
The tune is of course much better known as "Morning Has Broken", a minor hit in the seventies (?), though I don't remember who sang it. The version in the hymn book is in C, but it would be easier on the D whistle if changed to D (or G).

Just phoned the manager at the Meadow Bar to check everything is OK for the Slow Session this evening. (Had a niggling worry that he might have let the room to a private party and not let us know.) Anyway it's all systems go, and we can remind everyone at the classes tonight. It would be good if those with cars who are going on to the session could offer lifts to anyone without transport, as there is no obvious bus route (though I guess you could get a 27 or 45 from outside the Cameo to Forrest Road) and it's a bit far to walk.
