Johnny Murray of Lochee
![]() I learned this tune from fiddler Clare McLaughlin a few years ago. I think it's a variant of a bagpipe tune. Whatever, it's a cracking reel. Enjoy! Nigel Gatherer Crieff, Perthshire |

RE: TOW#3: Johnny Murray of Lochee
Hi Nigel,
A great wee tune indeed and a new one, again, to me. I notice that in the tab in bars 1,2,5 and 6 the G# appears on fret 5 rather than fret 6, and this was throwing me at first till I ignored the tab and just used the standard notation. The G is sharp all the way through the tune, I assume? Thanks again for providing new material. JK Mandolins - Handcrafted in Argyll, Scotland. |

RE: TOW#3: Johnny Murray of Lochee
Like John, I was a bit thrown by the G's in the tab, I think it is G sharp all the way through. It's a tricky one for me this and I will have to spend a bit of time on it tomorrow.
Well played Dick, you seem to just churn them out on the Sobell. Sorry you don't like the slower stuff but it's not to everyones taste. Nigel has loads of fantastic tunes in the locker.....great stuff...... Are we Brits a bit more reserved than our American counterparts????? RE: TOW#3: Johnny Murray of Lochee
Nigel, a quick question on the Tune of the Week. Can mp3s be uploaded to this group or is it just YouTube videos? If mp3s are allowable, how do you upload them? I have just recorded a version of Murray of Lochee but without any video input at present, just the mp3 converted from my Reaper recording.
Thanks, John JK Mandolins - Handcrafted in Argyll, Scotland. |

RE: TOW#3: Johnny Murray of Lochee
Would that be Lochee as in Dundee, Nigel?

RE: TOW#3: Johnny Murray of Lochee
Tried it on the tenor sax. On which it's a real pig to play, with all those awkward G sharps.
So far I don't like it very much. http://www.campin.me.uk |

RE: TOW#3: Johnny Murray of Lochee
1) Sorry about the Gs - they should all be sharp (I've changed the tablature).
2) Lochee is an area of Dundee. It possibly has the relationship to Dundee that Leith might have with Edinburgh. I used to live near Lochee. 3) Jack - don't play it on the sax. Sorted. 4) I don't know how to upload MP3s to the forum. I shall do some research, but it may have to wait a couple of weeks as I am in the middle of my summer schools, and I have hardly any time.
