Bogus Posts - Outcome
I have taken the decision to disable registration to the forum. Anyone who now wishes to join must send me an email and - hopefully - i'll manually register them and send them a password. I hope this works OK and doesn't deter too many people from participating.

It shouldn't deter anyone who is genuinely interested.

RE: Bogus Posts - Outcome
Given the large number of obviously bogus membership applications that were coming in I think this is probably the best way forward. I am sure this will be quicker than the current process and I hope this reduces the workload for you Nigel.

I'm sure you'll figure it out Nigel - now you have all that time on your hands! Keep up the good work.

I think you are going the right way with this, Nigel. Bogus applications must be a nightmare and you already must spend a huge amount of time just maintaining the site along with all your other activities. Good to see you back on-line again after your computer problems.

RE: Bogus Posts - Outcome
Well, I had arranged to get my computer collected and taken away to get fixed, but they couldn't do that because of the weather. In the end I managed to fix it myself (touch wood) by completely wiping it and restoring from a backup. So far, so good. What has prevented me from taking the reins again has been a bad attack of the blues - I simply couldn't face communicating with anyone! I'm on my way back now, though, but it's slow.

I guess you could always reverse the ban for a (very) short time, log out, pretend to be the new applicant, and enter their details. Then log in again quickly and restore the ban.
But I am sure there's a better way ...
Alistair.

Yes, so am I, but I'll probably end up doing what you suggest. At firdst I thought it might need your computer's ID, but I'm sure I can come up with a password for new applicants.

We might never get any more applicants!

RE: Bogus Posts - Outcome
I have not ever set up this for myself so am taking a guess based on MyBB support stuff. Information that might be useful can be found at: http://wiki.mybb.com/index.php/Admin_CP_...e_Options.
This suggests there is not the option (at first glance) to add in user yourself. You seem to have the options: "When registering an account, should users be activated instantly, be sent an email activation, be sent a random password, or be activated by an administrator?"

However, the "create new user page" sounds more helpful. Can you see this on your admin setup?

Once created, I assume you would email the password and username to the user.

Another option might be, if you can see and edit the database tables, you could manually enter: User ID; Username; Password; Email address.
http://wiki.mybb.com/index.php/Database_...mybb_users
but to me this sounds a bit technical and I would worry about causing further problems.

You might already know all this and ignore this if I have the wrong end of the stick

PS
Password Generator at http://www.pctools.com/guides/password/ works ok.
