The Wednesday Slow Session - nigelgatherer - 23-08-2010 10:26 AM

I'm going to ask Bennett's if the session can go back there. The manager has still to come back to me, but if he says yes, I think it's a good solution. If he says no, we need to put our thinking caps on again and start looking.

Anyone been to The Borough recently?

It would be great if we could get back to Bennets for the Wednesday Slow Sessions.
Have missed the last two Thursdays at The Borough.
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Trish Santer - 23-08-2010 11:27 AM

I have been to the Borough late on the last 2 Thursdays after other things. Numbers have been small but I gather the sessions have been good. I like the Borough, but if we can't have Wednesdays, we need somewhere on that night.
Bennet's is handier for Boroughmuir, so it would be good if we could get back there, but hopefully have some agreement about where football figures in their thinking!
It was interesting to note that during our week of Gilbert and Sullivan in the King's Theatre in March (when we went to Bennet's for after-show refreshment!!) the Green Room was closed every night except at the weekend, so as the barman - who recognised me from the sessions - said to me "We've missed your custom". I did indicate (as politely as I could muster) that we needed a venue we could rely on!

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Brian Dillon - 02-09-2010 04:36 PM

I have contacted the manager of the Waterloo Bar and he seems quite keen on the session taking place there. What do others think of this? And I will contact the Greenmantle pub to see if is possible if it can take place there. Just suggestions

Brian Dillon

I also enquired at the Greenmantle but it does not look hopeful as something else maybe is on a Wednesday night, but I will speak to the manager, but please contact me as the Waterloo option is limited. If anyone knows Nigel's mobile number or landline number could you please post it as I need to speak to him urgently about the slow session venue.

Brian Dillon

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Jack Campin - 03-09-2010 10:58 PM

I doubt the Greenmantle could work, they are far too busy with other events already and don't have a separate room.

Was there a problem with the Meadow Bar upstairs?

Carters in Haymarket/Tollcross?

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Brian Dillon - 04-09-2010 04:44 PM

Yes Jack, the Greenmantle was a no go, but the manger of the Waterloo Bar is very keen to have us, which is why I want to get in touch with Nigel to see what he thinks it may be a possibility..

We had a few sessions in the Meadow Upstairs a couple of years ago, and it worked very well. I would certainly be keen to go back there, though it's still not walkable from Boroughmuir of course. The only potential problem as I recall is that the room is bookable for private parties, and this would have priority over the slow session.
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - nigelgatherer - 05-09-2010 09:22 PM

I've been depressed for a few days, so I simply haven't been able to follow up a venue for the session. The Manager of Bennet's didn't get back to me, and I didn't get back to Brian about the Waterloo (sorry Brian). Where's the Waterloo?

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Jack Campin - 06-09-2010 05:47 PM

The Waterloo is in Waterloo Place.

I asked in Cloisters (Brougham Place) today, no go there.

Is it the Waterloo Buffet, Brian
( http://www.viewedinburgh.co.uk/pubsandbars/waterloo-buffet-info-34072.html ) ?

I could call at Bennet's tomorrow and try to speak to the manager in person, if it would help. Maybe a group of us could go. I have signed up for the moothie class at Boroughmuir tomorrow evening, which ends at 9.15, and could go down after that
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - nigelgatherer - 06-09-2010 09:38 PM

Yes, please do that. I don'tthink I can do it this week, so it would be very useful. Moothie? Go on yourself, my good man.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 07-09-2010 12:58 PM

Just phoned Bennets (229 5143) around 2pm. The manager (Barry) will was not there but will be on duty this evening, so I should be able to talk to him then. But the person who answered the phone warned me that "there's a big match on this evening", which is not a good omen, though it remains to be seen if the screen in the Green Room will be live as well as those in the main bar.

Maybe we should give the Waterloo Bar a try, as Brian suggests, especially as they seem keen to have us.
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 07-09-2010 04:00 PM

Just realised that the "big match" this evening is of course the Scotland v. Liechtenstein, which starts at 8.00pm, on Sky Sports 3 only

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - George - 07-09-2010 04:25 PM

"I have signed up for the moothie class at Boroughmuir tomorrow evening"
What a sensible chap you are alistair. :-)

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 08-09-2010 09:32 AM

Went down to Bennet's after the class last evening, and spoke to Barry the manager (only after waiting for the fairy-tale end to the big match, when everyone in the bar was transformed from despair to elation in the seventh minute of extra time).
He says they would welcome the return of the Slow Session to the Green Room on Wednesday evenings, which is great news. There is no TV screen at all now in the Green Room: indeed it was closed completely yesterday evening.
We can't restart tonight (8th Sept) as there is a private function booked, but everything should be OK next week (15th) and from then on, subject to final email confirmation from Barry.
I am absolutely delighted at the prospect of returning to Bennet's on Wednesday evenings.
Someone should write a tune to celebrate ...

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Eric Renshaw - 08-09-2010 12:25 PM

Very many thanks indeed for arranging this Alistair. It's a great location, and it's especially nice to know that we won't have to compete with the big screen!

Eric

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 11-09-2010 09:51 AM

Here's a simple wee tune that could be used to mark the resumption of the Slow Session in the Green Room.
Feel free to adapt, modulate, improve, or ignore altogether!

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Eric Renshaw - 11-09-2010 10:15 AM

Just played it through; it's a really nice tune that sounds appropriately mournful for our long absence!

I presume that a restart in the Green room on the 15th sans wide-screen soccer is now definite?

Cheers,
Eric

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - nigelgatherer - 11-09-2010 11:02 AM

Yes, it's all arranged - the screen is no longer there, apparently. They planned, God laughed, we benefit.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Jack Campin - 11-09-2010 11:05 PM

Alistair's tune got a bit discombobulated by whatever program generated the ABC. In particular the key line vanished. Sounds best (albeit rather doom-laden) in D minor to me:

Code:
X:1

Not sure about that F chord but I can't think of a better one.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 13-09-2010 09:27 AM

Thanks for efforts to disentangle the intended tune, Eric & Jack.
The key was (is) D major, though the D minor effect is interesting, Eric. I tend to think only in major, though: I guess it comes from the first and for a long time only instrument I could play being the moothie.
I did kind of notice that a smiley had appeared instead of the D in the key line of the ABC when I pasted it, but should have followed up on that. Very strange ...
The provenance of the generating software (Melody Assistant) is embedded as a comment at the start of the exported ABC.
I think the JPG of the score, which was embedded at the end of the original posting, was OK, though. Am attaching a MIDI file as well, and here is the ABC again:

Blast, it's happened again: the K: D line has got changed to KBig Grin!
Must be an artefact of the underlying forum system. Maybe the K: is taken for an HTML tag?
Anyway, it's not too hard to work round, now the cause is clear.

When you type a colon ( : ) next to a capital d ( D ) it becomes a smiley. What to do about it? I don't know. Is there a way to disable smileys?

Thanks again Nigel ...
I have just noticed there's a box below the "signature" tick box which says "Disable Smileys": that might do the trick!
In the comments, 15th September 2001 was meant to be 15th September 2010, tomorrow's date. As I recall, our expulsion from Eden was in June 2008, but now I am not so sure – maybe it was June 2009, which would be just 15 months ago.

Alastair,

thank you so much for arranging the session at Bennetts. I look forward to our return and practising your tune! I have also enjoyed playing your 'Agapanthus' tune from your book over the summer while looking at my flowers of the same name!

See you tomorrow.

Thanks Nicola, I just happened to be available to take the final small step in a long process initiated by Nigel some time ago.
Maybe we can play "Agapanthus" tomorrow at Bennet's, though I feel it's not very "traditional".

Good session last night, with a celebrity audience: Ruth Madoc, Anne Charleston, Denise Black et al.

Certainly, that's exactly what the Slow Session is for. Nigel issues speeding tickets to anyone who is tempted to play too fast.

Excellent session at Bennets last night. There must have been around 26 musicians playing plus the cast of The Calendar Girls joining in wherever possible. Pity they are off to Liverpool on Saturday as they clearly enjoyed themselves.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - nigelgatherer - 23-09-2010 12:33 PM

Yup, my mate Ruth and I tore it up last night. And did you see the way Jennifer Ellison kept smiling at me and gazing into my eyes (in between feeding her baby and snogging her boyfriend)?

Ruth Madoc for starters.
And http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ar_Hyd_y_Nos

No such excitement last night, but still a good session, and good to be back there.
Maybe just as well the cast didn't come in, as the show on at the King's this week was called "Punk Rock".
Brush up the wartime songs for next week as it's "Carrie's War". (Oh, and it's Welsh again!)

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 09-11-2010 04:06 PM

Playlist 1 for the moothie session at Sandy Bell's on alternate Mondays includes the set:
The Keel Row [A]
The Glasgow Highlanders [D]
Katie Bairdie [D]
Brochan Lom (aka Orange & Blue) (D)

Orange and Blue is in session book 2 page 5, but I don't think any of the others are in any of the books.
Apart from The Glasgow Highlanders though (which older readers will recall as the signature tune of a Saturday night Radio Scotland soap opera called The McFlannels), I think the other will be familiar to most people, so maybe we could have a go at some or all of these at tomorrow's slow session (10th November).

Some secondary schools are apparently opening today at least for senior pupils.

ok, forget that. I thought I might be able to get there, but no way.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 07-12-2010 09:12 PM

I had a message from Graham to say that three people (including him) turned up at Bennet's last Wednesday.
They didn't play but all agreed that they would come back this Wednesday (8th December) and hope there would be a few more.
Graham asked me to spread the word and encourage anyone who can get there on foot or by bus to come along and help make it a rousing, and warming, session.
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 09-12-2010 05:16 PM

A few of us made it to Bennet's last night (8th Dec), and made some music, but around 10pm a whole crowd came in to the Green Room, and although some of them listened some of the time, the background noise of conversation was such that it was hard to hear even the person next to you, never mind anyone else.
After I left Graham talked to the manager, and I append his message (slightly edited).
The gist of it is we won't be able to use Bennet's Green Room for the Slow Session again till well into the New Year.
Alistair

[Message from Graham 9th Dec]
The manager told us before we left last night that there is a function on next Wednesday. He also indicated that the Wednesday before Christmas would not be good either. Furthermore because of the pantomime next door (that noisy influx of people was to do with that) it wouldn't be an option for a while after Christmas, but he wasn't specific as to how long. It is possible the first Wednesday of the new term my be a problem and this will need clarification. I didn't get the impression he was fed up with us or trying to get rid of us. It seemed down to practical problems. He said he has your email and will contact you direct.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 10-01-2011 09:49 PM

No email response yet from Barry the Bennet's manager.
I phoned Bennet's this evening and the guy I spoke to said he thought the pantomime was not on on Wednesdays any more, so we could be OK. But I need to speak to Barry to get a definitive answer. He'll be there tomorrow morning and I'll phone back then.
Alistair.
Looked up the schedule for the King's Theatre pantomime, and the performance on Wednesday 12th Jan is a matinee starting at 14.00, so it certainly looks promising that there may not be problem with our using the Green Room in the evening.
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 11-01-2011 11:15 AM

Just spoke to Barry at Bennet's. He would prefer if we deferred resumption of the slow session till after the pantomime has finished, so the first session would be two weeks tomorrow, Wed 26th Jan.
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 20-01-2011 03:06 PM

When the Slow Session resumes at Bennet's next Wednesday (26th), how do people feel about focussing for the evening on one of the SMG Tune Books, for example Tune Book 3, which contains many fine tunes which are not often played, at least at the slow sessions. (We could maybe arrange to have copies of the tune book available for sale for the benefit of those who don't already have it, and want to have the dots.) That wouldn't preclude of course spontaneous suggestions of other tunes or sets to play, just provide a core, which would include I hope some tunes new to many people, which they would have an incentive for learning, especially if we continued this focus for two or three weeks.
Then in later weeks we could move on to Joy of Sets 1, for example, or one of the other tune books, or maybe Nigel's "Best of" Pub Session Tunes collection, the music for which was available a while back as a PDF for free download (though I could't find it when I went back to look for a link to it recently). That "Best of" collection includes two great pipe marches (Father John Macmillan of Barra, and Mrs MacDonald of Dunach) which by coincidence (or maybe not) are part of the Celidh Caleerie repertoire, so will already be familiar to anyone from that class.
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Trish Santer - 26-01-2011 01:12 AM

Sounds a good idea: as you say there are loads of tunes in the books that rarely get played.
I hope I may get along for one of my rare attendances.
Might I also suggest playing "The Wild Rose of the Mountain" in tribute to John Mason who wrote this very lovely tune. John was for many years conductor of the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra and passed away a few days ago. Stan Reeves came to Cafe Ceilidh at the Scottish Story-telling Centre and we played it there (in amongst all the Burns songs.)
Think I may have posted the dots here before but here they are again (with a couple of chord changes).

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 31-01-2011 03:03 PM

A great slow session last Wednesday, with what may have been a record number of players and singers.

I believe there was a lot of support at the end of the evening for going ahead with the session again this week (Wednesday 2nd Feb) from 9pm onwards, even though there are no classes at Boroughmuir that evening.
I will check with the manager that that's OK, but it's unlikely there will be a problem. I think Bennet's now see us as a fixture for Wednesdays, and would let us know anyway if there was any conflict.

We could continue to focus on Tune Book 3 for a week or two more, if there is general support.
Alistair.

I told people that we'd do Book 3 for a month. It means we'll be re-playing tunes more than just once, which gives them a better chance of being taken up.

Great, Nigel.
We'll make sure we do that this week, even though alas you won't be there.

After looking at that score attachment...

Is Martine going to be there for us to watch?

What does she DO while we're all watching?

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 14-03-2011 07:23 PM

Would like to suggest we might include "Edwin Flaws of Wyre" (a wonderful tune by Freeland Barber) in the Slow Session this coming Wednesday (16th March). It's one of the many great tunes on the play list for the Sandy Bell's Monday night moothie session. Don't have the dots but there are several renditions on YouTube, including this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ca9RFT00qc4
Alistair.

I attach a vertsion of Edwin Flaws that I found on my hard drive. I play this tune for a Gay Gordons.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 15-03-2011 12:04 PM

Thanks Nigel.
I'll print off a few copies (with title added) and bring them along to the session.

Maybe this might be appropriate right now. Probably the most famous of all Japanese tunes:

Just had a query from Barry the manager of Bennet's asking if we wanted to continue the Slow Session in the Green Room over June and July. It would be good to know what level of support there is for this, so I can respond accordingly.
Alistair.

As you know I won't be attending over that period, but I can't speak for anyone else.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Brian Dillon - 12-06-2011 03:05 PM

The Edinburgh Kitchen Session has its first birthday on the 20th June as a Session, so we are inviting anybody with an instrument and those without, to come and join in the celebrations at the Greenmantle Pub just past Surgeons Hall, and before St Patricks Square on the right hand side, on the corner. The more the merrier, and we hope all our friends from the Slow Session on a Wednesday and evervbody else can make it. Please come and make it a great night.

What time Brian?
There's a moothie session at Sandy Bell's on Monday 20th, but that finishes promptly at 9.00 and I would be keen to come round to the Greenmantle after that.
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - Trish Santer - 13-06-2011 10:40 AM

Sorry I can't make the Greenmantle one, Brian.
Would be up for coming to some at Bennet's thro' the holidays, so look forward to any more news: earlier start time, or do we have to wait for diners to finish? And will it be off during the EIFestival weeks?

I'll check with Barry about an earlier start time, and which dates in June and July would be available. I expect like you that once the festivals start they will want to keep the Green Room free for other functions.
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 14-06-2011 01:29 PM

The Slow Session at Bennet's Green Room tomorrow (15th June) from 9pm is definitely OK to go ahead, starting at 9pm: just got confirmation from Barry the manager. (We can't have an earlier start as meals are served in the Green Room up till 9pm.) Hope to see a good number there.
We can also probably continue for the rest of June and July if the demand is there.
Alistair.

RE: The Wednesday Slow Session - alistair - 16-06-2011 10:00 AM

A small but dedicated band of enthusiasts met at Bennet's Green Room last night to keep the Slow Session tradition alive. Polkas formed the majority of the tunes we played, but a wide range of other rhythms were also attacked, if not necessarily mastered.
We had the Green Room completely to ourselves, though potentially on future Wednesdays there could be diners there till 9.00pm.
There was a strong support from those present for continuing next Wednesday (22nd June) and I checked with the manager that that would be fine.
Alistair.
