As I can't 'share' directly from Facebook to here, I have appended Bob Murray's latest post on Megasesh, our annual mega pub session at the Canons Gait Pub in aid of Oxfam. It's always a great night out, so do come along if you can. Eric

Megasesh is this Wednesday. I might even be a wee bit excited.
It's just our regular Wednesday traditional music session at the Canons Gait Bar in Edinburgh, but writ large. It is part of the Oxjam Music Festival, raising funds for Oxfam.
We've wall-to-wall music - over thirty musicians have already said they're taking part in the free-for-all session element, plus we've special guest turns from Sandy Brechin, Charlie Munro, and Sally Simpson. And there's a buffet, and a raffle. You get a lot of night for your £10 ticket.
Tickets are going well, but there's still some remaining. Either take your chances that there will be some available on the door, or contact me if you want any tickets reserved for you. Musicians or audience equally welcome.
Doors 8:30 for a prompt 9:00pm start with Sandy Brechin's spot. Raffle prizes welcome.
We'll also be live-streaming the event. The link for that will appear on the "Canons' Gait Wednesday Session" Facebook page on the night.
Hope to see you there. Please feel free to share.

I'm not sure if I posted a copy of this tune in the old site or not but it's a very nice tune for all instruments.

The setting I've posted is for the harp but sounds great on the mandolin too as most harp tunes do. It was obviously a fiddle tune originally, of course.

  Mandolin Advise
Posted by: Alcluith - 17-10-2016, 10:24 AM - Forum: Scottish Music - Replies (3)

I am currently learning the mandolin and have a one off chance to upgrade my mandolin. Being left handed I have limited choice.  But I have tried and liked the left handed Eastman MD805 and love the look and sound of Nigel's Rigel mandolin. I have tried a Moon flat top but found it to be a bit quiet for my style of playing. So I thought I would ask some of the more experienced members what they would advise.

Saved Drafts - where to find again?
Posted by: Trish Santer - 16-10-2016, 11:42 PM - Forum: The Gathering Forum Admin - No Replies

Tonight I typed quite a long reply, but decided I needed to check it further before posting it. Can't find it anywhere! Don't want to have to re-type everything I said, so where can I find it, please? Nothing showing in my profile, tried the back button but it just will not come up!  Sad

Answering my own question, in case anyone else has similar problems: I had to go into the "Private Messages" bit, then a menu appeared on L-hand side of screen, including "Saved Drafts". Clicked on the thread name and it all disappeared again.
So............back to "Private Messages">Saved Drafts>Edit Drafts, and finally got my message back!

  Sad News..... Angus R Grant
Posted by: JAJ - 10-10-2016, 12:27 PM - Forum: Scottish Music - Replies (7)

I wasn't sure where to post this on the site but under Scottish Music seems fair enough...

Sad news this morning that Angus Grant Junior of Shooglenifty fame passed away at the weekend at St Columba's Hospice after a short illness

A tribute on The Shoogles own site

Deepest condolences to all his family, friends, and others who have been inspired by this fine musician.

Angus was one of my earliest  tutors at The Scots Music Group(Then known as The ALP) back in 1992. Thanks to him, I learned many great tunes, good advice, and a love and respect for the music which always be with me.

I have been enjoying your music on SoundCloud and in particular enjoyed Sarah's song.  Would love learn to play that tune, would you have the dots for it.

Today is the anniversary of The Battle of Glenlivat in 1594, when the Earl of Huntly defeated the Royal troops led by the Earl of Argyll.

"Glenlivat" can be found in Alexander Walker's collection of 1866.
"Glenlivet" is in Kerr's Merry Melodies, Book 1 (c1875), and has been recorded by Alison Kinnaird, The Whistlebinkies, and Ceolbeg.
"The Glenlivet" by James Scott Skinner is named after the whisky of the same name, and has been recorded by fiddlers Angus Cameron and J F Dickie, and under the name "Jimmy Lyon's Highland" by the Irish group Altan.
