I have disabled automatic registration now, as the number of spammers is increasing daily. If anyone wishes to join, hopefully they'll read the "How to Join The Gathering Forum" post and contact me. I can't see any disadvantages to this, but please let me know if it causes any problems with your interaction.

  Jenn & Laura-Beth
Posted by: Eric R - 29-09-2016, 02:20 PM - Forum: Other Classes, Workshops, Events - Replies (2)

At the BMG Rally/Festival in Glasgow earlier this year Jenn Butterworth (guitar & vocal) and Laura-Beth Salter (mandolin & vocal) gave a particularly stunning performance. On that basis I suggested to the Balerno Folk Club that they might invite them. I'm delighted to say that they gave a brilliant gig there last Tuesday, and their speed, accuracy, blending and interpretation was superb. I am mentioning this since Folk Clubs sometimes wonder who to invite, and if any of you are involved in making bookings I strongly recommend this delightful duo to you.

  Mystery Jig .. ?

Does anyone know this Jig?

I was asked its name recently but names are not my strong point.

Sounds Irish to me, but maybe not.

  Beyond a Joke

I've come to the forum to see that 30 accounts are waiting for activation. Most, if not all, will be bogus. Most of them will be obvious: name doesn't match the user name, or the email address is blatant advertising. However, there are always some that are ambiguous, so to give them the benefit of the doubt, I search for them. Very often their email address comes up in "Stop Forum Spam", but not always. All in all, it's a pain. I didn't have the problem before because I insisted that everyone asked me to join the forum, but in the new forum, some people had problems logging in.

I'm going to try it out soon, to stop all this nonsense, so if you have any problems with the changes, please let me know.

I'm getting really frustrated that no-one is playing this lovely tune in sessions.

Here's Aiden O'Rourke teaching it at a lovely gentle pace. You have no excuse now..   Wink

  In A Taynuilt Garden
Posted by: John Kelly - 06-09-2016, 04:04 PM - Forum: Scottish Music - Replies (10)

I recently was given this lovely tune by two fiddle friends, Jennifer and Jim Louden.  It was composed by Charlie Gore and this is all I know about the tune at present.  I wonder if this is the same Mr Gore who manages the index of Scottish Fiddle Tunes?

I was so taken with the tune that I have produced a mandolin version here using the score and harmony I got from J and J, and playing it on a mandolin I completed last August.

  Canons Gait
Posted by: Eric R - 06-09-2016, 03:58 PM - Forum: Other Classes, Workshops, Events - Replies (8)

Just to remind folks that the Canons Gait session starts up again on Wednesday 7th September. For those who haven't been before, it's an extremely friendly session and offers a warm welcome to anyone who wants to pop in and see what it is like. Around 18-25 of us usually turn up, and play tunes at anything from slow to reasonably quick tempo. Nothing too fast at all. We meet from 9.00-11.15 in the Canons Gait pub (recently renamed The Gait) in the Royal Mile about 100 yards down from the traffic lights at St Mary's Street.
