Told you they were good

Several folks now seem to be trying D'Addario strings, so once you have used them enough to form an opinion I'd be grateful if you could make a wee post to let the rest of us know what you think. For me it's probably a choice between D'Addario and Elixir. I presume folks have bought medium, rather than light or heavy guage?
Many thanks,
Eric
Yes, medium. When I was desperate before hogmanay, the only mandolin strings I could get in Perth were lights, but thankfully I broke no strings, so I haven't used them yet.
Have now fitted D'Addario "A" strings and hti sis a big improvement! The sound on the open "A" strings and first five frets is now good, unlike the previous ones (Pyramid), albeit they were just as good further up the fretboard - or so it seemed to me
Now tempted to fit the "E" strings with same - as they are sounding slightly "thin" on the first few frets. But changing ball end strings is a pain - especially at the bridge end where the retaining pegs are a pest to make stay in place.
So, D'Addario seems good news for ball-enders as the range of strings is so limited compared with loop-ends
I've used D'Addario for years - in fact, on guitar, since they became available in 1974. I have occasionally used D'Aquisto and these seem equally as good. I suppose Elixirs will avoid getting gunge in the windings and last longer but I don't think they're worth the additional cost.
I usually use the J74 mediums and I don't recall breaking a string in the last 6 years. I've tried the J76 heavy's but don't particularly like them. (hence a long standing advert to get rid of them on a certain other board) Will Kimble suggested I used the "A's" from the J76's with the others from the J74's which does work quite well but with the cost of strings I don't feel inclined to destroy the 5 sets I have left.
I haven't tried the Newtone although they are made not far from where I live - they always seem expensive. The cheapest source of D'Addarios seems to be Elderly instruments. Their current price is $4.80 a set for J74's but this gets progressively cheaper the more you buy. They charge $10 postage and providing you keep the order below £18 you don't get charged duty/vat. The problem with the £/$ rate is that you can buy fewer sets than you used to be able to before getting into the vat. The sting in the tail is that the post office also charge £8 for collecting the tax to you have to factor that into your calculations.
